Brave New World
The NCAA Tournament is fun, but it doesn’t own me like it used to. Part of the reason is what everyone was calling an upset this past weekend really wasn’t. The concept of team is always preached to our players, but in the Tournament when Mercer defeats Duke we see it lived out.
The mid-major schools have players that stay for four years, while the Duke/Kentucky/Louisville teams are led by players, with incredible athleticism, who stay just one year.
The mid-major schools are fielding the better teams these days. Thus when they win, it can hardly be called an upset. I welcome your thoughts.
Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow Department:
UCLA fans love head coach Steve Alford now, but will they love him after Florida blows the Bruins out this week? Will they still love Alford if he’s a one and done in next year’s tournament? The most fickle thing on the planet, besides a promise from the federal government, is a UCLA basketball fan.
I interviewed Gene Bartow, the man who replaced John Wooden, twelve years ago. Bartow went 52-9, 24-4 in league, reached a Final Four, and was run out of town. He said; “UCLA is a great place, all you have to do is win.”
I like Alford, but at UCLA (see Jim Harrick) all glory is fleeting.
Department of Income Inequality:
Detroit Tigers pitcher Max Scherzer went 21-3 last year with a 2.90 earned run average. He turns 30 this July and just rejected a six-year $144-million offer from the Tigers.
The base wage for a player at Triple A is $2,150 a month. In Single A, it is $850.00 a month. Remember a minor league baseball season extends from April to August.
