South El Monte Names Saavedra

George Hernandez

Roy Saavedra is in as South El Monte’s new varsity baseball coach. He’ll be taking over for Dave Sheiner who resigned back in September.
Saavedra has coached competitive traveling baseball for years for his son Aaron Saavedra who is a South El Monte alum and All-Mission Valley league defensive back and second baseman.
South loses players like Saavedra, Mario Lopez, Pablo Ocegudea and Romen Aguinaga, but do have a nice bunch coming back with LHP-Mariah Quintana, INF-Fernando Calderon and OF-David Mora.
Saavedra and staff will try to turn around a team that went 7-8 in league last year and 10-12 overall. Eagles haven’t made the playoffs since the 2012 season and hasn’t won a MVL title since being co-champs with Mtn.View in 2006.
