Do You Know Who This Guy Is?

On this date in 2009 the Colorado Rockies beat the Chicago Cubs 6-2 in front of 46,118 fans at Coors field.

Taking the hill the ninth inning for the Cubs was lefthanded reliever John Grabow (San Gabriel Class of 1997). He faced five hitters, got a strikeout, and put up a goose egg.

Grabow put together a solid nine year MLB career that saw him play in 506 games and compile a 24-19 record as a middle reliever for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs. He struck out 400 hitters, against only 220 walks, using a fastball, slider, and one of the game’s better change ups.

A third round pick of the Pirates after a three-year varsity career for San Gabriel, where he was named all CIF and Almont League MVP in 1997, Grabow was signed by the Dodgers to a minor league contract in 2011 but opted before pitching with the team in 2012.
