Nice Season For The Lions

Although it wasn’t a great ending, the El Monte Lions baseball team this spring had its first winning season since 2007. They also advanced to the second round of the playoffs for the first time in a decade.
Head Coach Steven Urena guided his team to a 13-12 record, and a 10-5 second place finish behind Arroyo in the Mission Valley League. In 2012 they went 5-10 in the MVL, 5-16 overall.
Junior lefthander Johnny Alvarez led the team in pitching with and earned run average of 2.77 in 83.1 innings pitched. He struck out 65.
Alvarez was complemented on the right side by senior Eddie Ramos, who won five games (5-1), pitched 41 innings, struck out 17 and walked only four.
At the plate a pair of juniors led the way. Juan Amaya hit .439 with a pair of home runs and 17 runs batted it. Third baseman Jacob Moran hit .346 with 14 Rbis.
Over half the roster returns for 2014, including freshman Isaiah Morales. Morales made his first varsity appearance on May 1st. and collected an RBI single against Gabrielino. In limited action he went seven of 18 (BA. .389) and five runs batted in.
