On this date 42 years ago Baldwin Park alum (Class of 1964) Roger Freed of the Philadelphia Phillies went 2-for-2 with a walk against future Hall of Famer Phil Niekro of the Atlanta Braves in front of 4,976 at Atlanta County Stadium.

The Braves won the game 6-2, but 1971 would be Freed’s biggest season in the Majors. Playing in 118 games, mainly in right field, driving in 37 runs with 6 round trippers, and a .221 batting average.

Signed by the Baltimore Orioles, after playing at Mount San Antonio College, Freed would play parts of eight seasons (1970-79) in the Majors with five (Orioles, Phillies, Cincinnati Reds, Montreal Expos, and St. Louis Cardinals) different teams.

His MLB totals included 22 home runs with 108 Rbis.  A long minor league career concluded in 1980 with 225 home runs. 581 Rbis, and 1,032 hits. He was the International League MVP in 1970 and the American Association MVP in 1976.

Freed passed away due to heart related issues on January 9th, 1996 at the age of 49 and was buried at Oakdale Memorial Park in Glendora.
