LA Mirada, CA – The top-seeded Matadores (9-1) used a second half shutout of the Apaches (4-7) to pull away and advance to the Quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section’s Southeast Division Playoffs with their 42-17 win Friday night at La Mirada’s Ron Davis Stadium.

Running back Adam Carrasco continued to be the Matadores’ primary offensive weapon, rushing for 229 yards on 17 carries, four of which came in the first half. Carrasco was pulled in the third after three carries, but the Matadores were in control of the game by then.

Matadores quarterback Gerry Myres scored twice in the third quarter, both times to receiver Tyler Luatua for touchdown passes of eight and nine yards in the quarter, putting the game on ice. ‘

In the first half, the Apaches took an early 3-0 lead on a 27-yard field goal by Nick Pulciano, but the Matadores responded with a three-yard score by Carrasco at the midpoint of the quarter, putting the Mats up 7-3. The Apaches took back the lead on their next drive on an 86-yard kickoff return and a 10-yard pass from quarterback Zachary Lee to Joey Willm, taking a 10-7 lead. The Mats would take advantage of a strip by Luatua with Carrasco’s second score, this time from midfield, putting the Mats up 14-10.

In the second, after the Mats increased their lead to 21-10, the Apaches scored one last time, as linebacker Nick Ryor got a rare interception off Myres and returned to ball 45 yards for the score, cvutting the lead to 21-17. It would be the closest the Apaches would get for the remainder of the game.
