El Monte, CA - Of course El Monte and Griffin Bowl revenge was on the mind of the Southmen Friday night, but first they had to push through Mt. View to get there. No problem, South El Monte dominated from the second quarter on for a 31-0 victory over the Vikings.
After a scoreless first quarter the Eagles Leo Artiaga crashed in for the game’s first score at the 5:59 mark. Agustin Pinto added the point after and it was 7-0 South.
Four minutes down the timeline, a pass interference call aided SEM and moments later Levi Wells went 2-yards to Javier Machuca for a touchdown. Pinto drilled the PAT and it was 14-0 Eagles at the break.
The Southman opened the third by lowering the ka-boom on the Vikings. From his own 15 Wells, using play action, connected with Machuca (the South El Monte word for “Fast”) at midfield who then exploded the rest of the way to paydirt. Pinto added the “thanks” and it was 21-0.
Seven minutes later South capped another drive when Eric Garcia scored on a 5-yard run up the middle. Pinto provided the “frosting” and it was 28-0.
With 8:17 to play in the contest another SEM advance stalled out. Pinto trotted out and booted a 24-yard field goal to close the scoring.
The victory was the third straight for the Eagles and improved them 5-4 overall, 3-1 in Mission Valley League play. Next week they travel to El Monte to play for the Griffin Bowl and a share of the MVL title. The Southmen lost to the Lions 20-13 last season in a heartbreaker.
For Mt. View the loss was its fifth straight after starting the season 3-1. Now standing at 3-6 overall, 0-4 in league, they host Rosemead to close out the year.
