La Puente, CA – In a battle for a share of the Montview League title the Azusa Aztecs and the La Puente Warriors hooked up at McIntosh Stadium Friday night and the Warriors dominated on both sides of the ball en route to a 28-7 victory.

Joey Centeno scored three times on runs of 62 and eight yards and a punt return of 50.

After the teams traded punts on their opening possessions, the Warriors got the party started going 63-yards on eight plays capped by a 28-yard pass from Isaac Vasquez to Jose Ochoa. Henry Rodriguez booted home the extra point an La Puente had the lead with 4:14 left in the opening frame.

The Aztec tied the score close to midway through the second quarter. A bad snap was recovered by Azusa at the Warrior 40. Three plays later Angel Flores scored on a 10 yard run.

After the teams traded punts the Warriors struck again when Centeno fielded a punt at the 50, juked, jived and bolted 50-yards to paydirt.

The advantaged remained at seven for La Puente until early in the fourth quarter. It was Centeno again the time on a 62-yard scamper capping a three play 66-yard drive.

The final nail was put in the Aztec coffin by who else, Centeno. The senior running back found the endzone from eight yards away to put a finish on a four play 28-yard drive.

Centeno finished the evening gaining an even 100-yards on seven carries and the three scores.

Also heavy in the mix running the ball was Ruben Elias who carried the ball 19 times for 102 tough yards.

One of the biggest stories of the evening had to be the stellar play of the Warrior defense. La Puente held an Aztec offense coming off a huge victory over Gladstone to a total of 197-yards and the lone score.

“The defense played great, they were outstanding tonight. We shut them down pretty good we had a ton of three and outs. The defense kept us in the game the whole night” commented La Puente head coach Brandon Rohrer after the game.

Of note at the end of the game was the absence of Aztec starting quarterback Jose Ledesma. The junior signal caller was noticeably limping after the contest. Azusa will need to be at full strength for next weeks match up with Sierra Vista as a possible playoff birth will be on the line.
