The Poetrypalooza tour, which celebrates the art of poetry, made its way to El Monte, Valley Mall on August 16. El Monte was the eighth stop in the 15-city tour. Poetrypalooza was created by Kimberly Cobian, a local poet and artist, who is a member of ZZyZx WriterZ, group.
The tour brings together artists from all over Southern California. Here are just a few stops the Poetrypalooza made, Whittier, Long Beach, and Pomona before arriving to El Monte’s Valley Mall.
The El Monte event, presented by the ZZyZx WriterZ, was organized by The Art Movement, yet another wonderful group of artists and musicians from the local area.
A number of talented poets read during the open mic session, included Christopher Trevilla, Baldomero Perez, Armando Ortiz, and Mary Torregrossa. Musician Mike Johnson, with guitar in hand, performed a few songs for the crowd.
Kimberly Cobian mentioned how important it is to “[work] together to ensure that places like El Monte and other cities continue the artistic and cultural influences and inspirations for future generations.” She also presented a new anthology of poems by the ZZyZx WriterZ, with a cover illustration by Melissa Lyndell.
Efrain Oquendo, a member of The Art Movement, also shared some words with the audience about the importance of coming together as a community to celebrate the arts. The Art Movement hosts art shows on Thursday evenings at the American Legion Post on Peck Road.
