On January 30th, five students were chosen for their winning artwork for AYC’s Annual Lunar New Year Art Contest: The Year of the Horse. Each year, AYC partners with KSCI-TV (LA18), the leading Asian language television station in Los Angeles, to encourage students to use art as a means to share their artistic vision about the Lunar New Year. All five winners were awarded special recognition and monetary incentives ranging from $50 to $150. Their artwork will be on display at AYC’s May L. To Educational Center and online at AYC’s webpage and social media feeds.
Over 30 entries were received and AYC awarded one first place winner, two second place winners and two third place winners. All entries were judged on four criteria: originality; creativity; design; and incorporation of theme. The first place award went to Cherrylynn Go, age 19, of AYC’s Workforce Investment Act (WIA) program. The second place awards went to Ervin Chen, age 12, and Kayla Palacios, age 9, of AYC’s Accelerating Children’s Education (ACE) After-school program. The third place awards went to Itzel Hernandez, age 9, and Jacky Weng, age 7, of AYC’s Accelerating Children’s Education (ACE) After-school program.
The Lunar New Year Art Contest is only one of several events that AYC hosts or participates in during this time of year. AYC co-hosted a booth at the Temple City Lunar New Year Street Festival that took place over the weekend. In the weeks ahead, AYC will be featured at the Annual L.A. Chinatown Firecracker 10K Run on Feb. 23rd, and the 13th Annual Los Angeles Lantern Festival on March 1st. A list of upcoming Events and current Programs are found at www.asianyouthcenter.org.
