Annual Pinewood Derby Race: El Monte Boy Scout Unit 551

By: Mark D. Peters

The American Legion Post 261 in El Monte was filled with excitement and anticipation on March 4th, 2014 as parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles came out to support their favorite Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and venture and even the adults got in on the action; as El Monte Boy Scout Unit 551 held their Annual Pinewood Derby Race.  Pictured below are Winners of the races, from Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venture Crew, Adults and little brothers and sisters. Congratulations to all the winners and to everyone who participated.  Next year will be even bigger and better. As a parent and a Cub Scout design, carve, paint, weigh, refine, and race the car, a bond of partnership is created. This is at the heart of the event’s success. In addition, Cub Scouts & Boy Scouts build confidence and take pride in their own growing skills and hard work. So enjoy the ride!

The whole experience is for fathers and mothers and sons to do something together, every year the scouts are given a wooden block to carve and design.  Once the scouts and their parents are finished designing their car, the cars are judged on design, skill, paint job etc…  These cars are then raced against each other in different heats to determine which car is fastest.   This year’s Cub Scout Winners Diego in 1st place and Nathan in 2nd place and two 3rd place winners tied were Roman and Quintin. The Boy Scout/Venturer winners are Candy and Anthony in 1st place, Ryan in 2nd place and Triston in 3rd place. The kids experienced the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat as one heat after another sent the customized wooden cars speeding down the wooden track.
