Kiwanis Honors Dr. Doug Sears Learning Center Students Darby Cassel and David Deuby

Temple City

The Kiwanis Club of Temple City recognized two outstanding students from the Dr. Doug Sears Learning Center.  Pictured with the proud students is Principal Stephen Martin Edo and evening clerk Cheryl Vigil. The two honorees have Mr. Rios, Mr. Jahan, Mr. Patterson, and Mrs. Roberts for their teachers.

Darby is 15 years old and in the 10th grade. He has an older brother and enjoys biking, video games, and making music.  Darby said, “The best things about the Learning Center are the staff and teachers are nice, not to much peer pressure, and being able to work at my own pace.”  His favorite memory is all the fun times with his older brother.  Personal goals are to graduate from High School, enter college or join the Army, and become successful.

David is 16 years old and in the 11th grade. He has two older sisters and enjoys baseball, major league gaming, and biking.  David said, “The best things about the Learning Center are the staff such as Mr. Rios and Mr. McKinnis, and football.”  His favorite memory was going to a Christian event in San Diego last year.  He would like to change the way people respect each other. Personal goals are to attend Trade School, graduate, and get his driver’s license.

Each week the Temple City Kiwanis Club is pleased to recognize outstanding students and their teachers from Cloverly, Emperor, Longden, Oak Avenue, and the Dr. Doug Sears Learning Center.  Kiwanis treats students and their teacher to lunch.  Students receive a certificate, a letter for their parents, a bumper sticker, a gift certificate from The Hat Restaurant, and a photograph of them receiving their award.  Their photo will also be published in Temple City Life, Mid Valley News, Temple City Tribune, and displayed in the Temple City Unified School District lobby.

Temple City Kiwanis has been serving our community since 1939.  Members are dedicated men and women who desire to make a difference in the quality of life for the youth of Temple City.  Kiwanis meets at 12:00 noon each Tuesday at Denny’s Restaurant.  To find out more about Kiwanis, please call Jerry Jambazian at (626) 286-2444.  You can also visit their website at
