The El Monte Police Department will lend their support to the national Click it or Ticket Campaign running from May 20 to June 2. As travelers plan their Memorial Day holiday, El Monte Police urges all motorists to buckle up.
“As we kick off the busy summer driving season, it is important that everyone buckles up every time they go out, both day and night–no excuses,” said El Monte Police Chief Steve Schuster. “Our officers are prepared to ticket anyone who is not wearing their seat belt.”
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 52 percent of the 21,253 vehicle passengers killed in 2011 were not wearing seat belts. In 2011, seat belts saved an estimated 11,949 lives nationwide, according to NHTSA.
While this special campaign will run from May 20 to June 2, officers are prepared to enforce seat belt laws year-round, and will be on the lookout for motorists who are not belted.
