Can you believe it is almost Memorial Day? Do you remember going to the cemetery to decorate the graves of those who had passed away? In the early 1900’s Mrs Susan Thompson Lewis Parish (the daughter of Ira Thompson, leader of the first wagon train to arrive in El Monte in 1851) brought back the custom of cleaning the cemetery on Memorial Day. It was originally called Decoration Day and honored all who had passed away. It was later changed to Memorial Day and dedicated to those who gave their lives in the military service to keep our country free. Savannah is an old Pioneer Cemetery designated at California Historical Landmark #1046, and we would like to bring back the tradition of decorating the graves of our loved ones. We hope you will join us.
Our Annual Clean-Up Day will be on Saturday – May 25 th. from 10:00 – 2:00. Please bring your gloves and hand tools. We will have people there to assist you if you are like me and can’t get down anymore to clean around the headstones…..The “Golden Years” aren’t what I expected.” We will have drinks and snacks for everyone.
We will hold our Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday May 27 th at 10:30 am. Please join us in paying tribute to those who fought to keep our nation free.
