El Monte Women’s Club members made an impressive showing again at the Annual San Gabriel Valley District Women’s Clubs’ Birthday Council & Crafts Festival. Held in the Santa Fe Springs Community Center every year, club members from throughout the region submit home-made crafts for judging in a number of categories including needlepoint, knitting, crocheting, jewelry design, etc. Five El Monte Women’s Club members submitted entries in this years Crafts Festival: Rita Cazares, Elsie Gomez, Mary Jo Kolakoski, Esthela Torres de Siegrist, and Jo Ann Villa., Capturing top honors for the “Favorite” craft among the 100+ entries was El Monte Women’s Club Member Jo Ann Villa, who entered her uniquely beautiful needlecraft. Elsie Gomez won first place in doll design while Esthela Torres de Siegrist won first place for a crocheted baby blanket; first place for crocheted baby booties with tatting; and second place for her crocheted baby sweater. The consensus among this year’s judges was that it was an extremely challenging task to select the winning crafts since there were so many outstanding entries in all categories. Local El Monte Women’s Club members are already planning for their entries for next year’s festival.
