El Monte

The El Monte City Council unanimously approved the El Monte Promise Scholarship Program to provide financial assistance to former El Monte high school students who are striving to further their education by attending Rio Hondo Community College.

The purpose of the El Monte Promise Scholarship Program is to alleviate some of the financial burdens students may have during their studies.  Scholarships can be used to pay for tuition, text books and other course materials.

“We know how hard it is to pay for college as tuition and material costs keep rising,” said Mayor Andre Quintero.  “It’s our hope that the El Monte Promise Scholarship Program will help these hard-working students achieve their education goals by alleviating a portion of the costs associated with going to school.”

The goal of the program is to provide 80 students each with $500 scholarships.  To fund the scholarship, the Council allocated $50,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds in its FY 12/13 budget.

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must meet a series of requirements including residing in El Monte, maintaining a certain GPA, enrolling in at least nine units for Spring 2013 and having a household income at or below 80% of the Area Median Income for Los Angeles County.

“We want to take away any obstacles that these students might face as they pursue their college degrees,” said Councilmember Juventino “J” Gomez.  “This scholarship program will make a difference as we train the next generation of students.”

Interested applicants will be instructed to complete an application and include all required documents for further consideration.  The Rio Hondo College Foundation will be the entity operating the El Monte Promise Scholarship Program and will be responsible for selecting the participants.
