SGHS Alumni 5k-Run, Walk, Crawl. Remembering Matadors.

San Gabriel, CA – On October 20th 2012 San Gabriel High School Alumni, family and friends ran through the streets of San Gabriel. Runners, walkers, and crawlers came from all over to attend or help. Even a dog made the 5k trip. The event was a fund-raiser for the SGHS Matador Boosters Club sponsored by Flint Enterprises-Kendal Baldwin Flint, Spin 360-Tina Marie Schnieder and L&L Barbeque-Kiva Pimes Morita.
The day was perfect for a run, cloudy and cool. Members of the San Gabriel High School Cheer squad were there to cheer for the start and finish of the race. The participants started out in the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse, formally known as the Civic Auditorium, parking lot then headed to the High School where many runners stopped to look and take pictures of the changes made to the school since they attended. Next, they ran by the San Gabriel Mission church and Smith Park. Volunteers greeted the runners at Smith Park cheering them on and pointing out the next direction. Shortcuts were available but with the volunteers cheering on the runners everyone completed the course with victory smiles.
At the finish of the race, runners received a medal, a special tattoo, and gift certificates. Everyone had a great time meeting old friends at Luna’s Restaurant in San Gabriel after the race, then later on in the evening at Clearman’s Galley “The Boat” for SGHS All Years reunion. Kendall said over 40 runners participated, the oldest alumni was from 1970 with the class of 1985 bringing in the largest attendance. Motivators for going were pride for school, sports, and remembering old friends who have passed away.
This was the first year and plans are under way to make this a yearly event on the weekend of San Gabriel High’s Homecoming festivities. Kendall said, “Thanks again to EVERYONE for making this event a huge success! Get ready for NEXT YEAR! “
