El Monte Gets Spooky with Cemetery Walk and Talk
By Chelsea Dickerson
El Monte, CA –A sold-out crowd enjoyed the City of El Monte’s sunset tour of Savannah Memorial Park, a State Historical Landmark and site of El Monte’s best ghost stories. Cemetery guide Dwain Crum led Thursday’s tour and provided insights on the lives of City’s pioneer families, all part of the City’s Centennial celebration.
“We thought this event would be a fantastic way for our community to get in the Halloween and Día de los Muertos spirit,” said El Monte City Councilmember Vicky Martinez. “We wanted to give our residents an opportunity to learn about our city’s remarkable history, especially stories of El Monte’s pioneer families, in their final resting place.”
As part of the program fee, Savannah Memorial Park provided souvenir flashlights, which added to the tour’s spooky ambiance. Local businesses Cha Café and Pop Shoppe provided appetizers and Halloween-inspired desserts to attendees.
Councilmember Martinez remarked that the City is considering expanding the event in the future to meet the overwhelming response for tickets.
