Mrs. Alma Rivas, a faculty member at SGMHS, was chosen by the Holyland Democracy Project to travel to Israel this summer with 7 other Catholic School teachers and approximately 21 Charter School teachers. The program was sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Los Angeles.
After a lengthy interview process, Mrs. Rivas was chosen to experience a 10-day tour of Israel. In exchange for this trip, all she had to do was bring her own spending money, pay for some meals, and incorporate her trip into her Religion classes, talking about Israel and her experience.
While in Israel, she visited Bethlehem, Nazareth, Jerusalem, and Tel Aviv. Mrs. Rivas saw the place of Jesus’ Birth and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, Masada, the Jordan River, the Dead Sea, the Sea of Galilee, Yad Vashem, the Western Wall, and she walked the Stations of the Cross. She felt it was a very humbling experience and is looking forward to teaching her students about this very sacred place and its historical richness.
