Once again, California weather shows us how lucky we are to live in this wonderful State. The so-called “rainy month” of April has hardly passed and already I am looking forward to the warm months of summer and lots of outdoor activities.
“Everything is Coming Up Roses” will be the President’s theme this year for the El Monte Friend O’’Garden Club. The monthly meeting will be held on Friday, May 3, 2013 at the Norwood Library, 4550. N. Peck Road, El Monte, California. President Rita Cazares will conduct the last meeting of her term of office before the new club officers are installed. In keeping with the theme, “Everything’s Coming Up Roses”, a Rose Show, for members and guests’ will be conducted by Steve Heimple. Awards will be: First Prize for Best Overall Rose, Second Prize for Rose with Best Color, Texture and Structure and Third Place for the Most Promising Rose. The El Monte Airport Restaurant, Annia’s Kitchen, will cater the special occasion the lunch. The incoming 2013-2014 Officers are: President, Steve Heimple; First Vice President, Esthela Torres De Siegrist; Second Vice President, David Siegrist; Secretary, Mary Jo Kolakoski and Treasurer, Rita Cazares. Larry Giangrico will serve, as Parliamentarian and Mavis Hansen will be the Sunshine and Hospitality Chairman and Arboretum Representative. Installing Officer will be Ms. Sandy Fout. Two new members will be welcomed this month, Susie and John Juarez, daughter and father. The objectives of the El Monte Friend O’Garden Club are to stimulate interest and disseminate knowledge in all phases of gardening, to encourage home gardens and to promote the preservation of natural resources. Membership is open to those who have an active interest in gardening. El Monte Friend O’Garden Club was Organized and Federated in 1956; is a member of the Arboretum District of California Garden Clubs, Inc, The National Council of State Garden Clubs, Inc. and Pacific Region. President’s flower will be the yellow rose.
The Transportation Services Division of the El Monte Public Works Department will promote a Family Adventure Shuttle to Olvera Street for the Cinco de Mayo Festival on Saturday, May 4, 2013. Departure from the El Monte Trolley Station will be at 10:30 a.m. with the return trip from Olvera Street at 4:00 p.m. Price of $5.00 per person includes round-trip shuttle transportation only. Tickets must be purchased by May 2nd at the El Monte Trolley Station, 3650 Center Avenue, El Monte, California. Advance purchase is required. On Saturday May 4, 2013 from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm the Sixth Annual Community Block Party will be held at 1720 N. Walnut Avenue, La Puente, California. The Community Blocki Party is brought to you by Senator Dr. Ed Hernandez together with St. Stephen Baptist Church are providing information on: Healthcare Legislation, state agencies, preventive healthcare and staying healthy and fit. The Annual FIESTA OF BOOKS will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2013 from 10:00 AM until 1:30 PM at the El Monte Community Center, 3130 Tyler Avenue, El Monte, California. El Monte City School District, Mt. View School District and the El Monte Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department sponsor this annual event. This is a marvelous opportunity for children to receive free books. All children should be encouraged to read.
The City of El Monte Community & Senior Services Division will present a Mother’s Day Luncheon & Dance on Thursday, May 9, 2013 at the Jack Crippen Senior Center, 3120 N. Tyler Avenue, El Monte, California. The doors will open at 10:00 am and Lunch served at 11:30 am. Tickets may be purchased prior to the event. Cost is $3.00 those under 60 years of age and those over 60 years of age, $2.00. The lunch will feature Chicken in Wine Sauce with imperial rice, peas, waldorf salad and Cream Layer Cake or fruit for dessert. If you need transportation, please call 626-580-2217.
