March, the third month of our year was originally the first month of the year in the Roman calendar. The Romans named the month after Mars, the God of War. March is usually the windiest month of the year and a perfect time to be flying kites. This year, International Women’s Day is observed on March 8, 2013, Daylight Savings Time will fall on Sunday, March 10 and a fun day to observe is Saint Patrick’s Day on Sunday, March 17, 2013. The first day of spring this year will be March 20th and Easter Sunday, early this year, will be on the last day of the month, Sunday, March 31, 2013.
The San Gabriel Valley District of Women’s Clubs will hold their Spring Council at the Covina Women’s Club, 128 S. San Jose Avenue, Covina, California on Friday, March 8, 2013. The Spring Council is a special annual meeting at which contests for Art and Photography and a Music Competition is held. Art and photography entries from many of the local women’s clubs will be judged on Thursday, March 7, 2013 and the awards presented on Friday, March 8, 2013. The Art Contest Chairman is Nancy Anzalone, Photography Contest Chairman is Nancy Hippach and the San Gabriel Valley District Arts Chairman is Terry Perkins. Judges for the Art Contest and the Photography Contest are: Emily Kemper, Hisako Koga and Bonnie Pooley.
The Music Competition will be presented by the winners of the local women’s clubs, in the San Gabriel Valley District of Women’s Clubs, on Friday, March 8, 2013 and four students, one winner in each category, will be awarded a $500.00 Music Scholarship. The Senior President’s Council, Hispano Americano Club will hold their Black and White Dance on Saturday, March 9, 2013, at the Jack Crippen Multipurpose Senior Center, 3120 Tyler Avenue, El Monte, California. Dance from 12:00 Noon until 5:00 PM. Tickets pre-sale price: $8.00 and tickets sold at the door $9.00. Lunch is from 12:00 Noon until 4:00 p.m. and $5.00 per person, optional.
