Election Time ….
Five candidates to join the San Gabriel City Council in the next scheduled municipal elections on March 5 are on the campaign trail. Only three council positions are up for grabs meaning that two candidates will return to the sidelines and three will join continuing council members John Harrington and Juli Costanzo. The candidates in this year’s elections include: Kevin Sawkins, Mario De La Torre, David Gutierrez, Chin Ho Liao and Jason Pu. Sawkins (Mayor), De La Torre (Vice Mayor) and Gutierrez (past Mayor) are all incumbents and want to return as council member. Ho, a structural engineer, and Pu, an attorney and community activist, are both trying to join the council for the first time. Two other positions are also on the ballot, city clerk and city treasurer. John Janosik and Eleanor K. Andrews are both returning incumbents and are running unopposed in this year’s election. All positions are four year terms. Also on the ballot is a Transient Occupancy (Hotel) Tax Measure which will increase the tax on visitors staying at San Gabriel Hotels and Motels from 10% to 12%. Perhaps revenues from the increased sales tax will be used to fix the growing number of potholes in the city. No other elected positions or measures are on the ballot. Ultimately, city voters must decide whether they were better off now than 4 years before. As a city resident, I’m not sure San Gabriel is a better place to live than 4 years ago. Seems like the city is more interested in big development than fixing the infrastructure (like big potholes). …. Rosemead Star….
