As you enjoyed the Holiday on Monday, did you think about the true meaning of Veterans Day and do your children know why they had a holiday away from school? Veterans Day, November 11th. Originally this day commemorated the end of the fighting in World War 1 at 11:00 AM on November 11, 1918. It was called Armistice Day, but since that day applied only to World War 1, the new name was proclaimed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954. Veterans Day now honors U.S. soldiers in all wars. Canada honors its soldiers on the same date. There it is known as Remembrance Day. The National observance of Veterans Day in the United States takes place at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. November 10, 2012 also marks the 237th Anniversary of the United States Marine Corps.
