Columbus Day, observed on the second Monday in October, which will be Monday, October 8, 2012 was formerly observed on October 12th.This holiday, honoring Christopher Columbus’ sighting of America on October 12, 1492, is observed in the United States and also parts of Canada, in Puerto Rico and in some cities in Italy and Spain.    Although Columbus was not the first explorer to set foot in the Western Hemisphere, his landing at San Salvador Island, in what is now the Bahamas opened the way for the settlement of America by Europeans.  The first celebration honoring the event was in 1792.  Columbus Day became a legal holiday In the United States in 1892, 400 years after the famous voyage.  It was then called Discovery Day.  Many cities and organizations sponsor parades and banquets honoring the holiday.  For many, this is a fun holiday with many options as to how to spend it.  So, what ever you decide to do, Enjoy!.

On Sunday, September 30, 2012, The El Monte Historical Society  held their Quarterly Tea at the El Monte Historical Museum, 3150  Tyler Avenue, El Monte, California.  The Tea was served from 1:00 PM until 2:00 P.m. and was hosted by the women of El Monte Soroptimist International. The Program speaker was Nancy Kennon, a member of the El Monte Moose Lodge #1321.  Many of us who are not members, think of the “Moose” as a wonderful place to have a delicious meal at a very reasonable price, and most of us know Nancy is the one who cooks all those delicious meals.   True, but as Ms. Kennon spoke on the History of the Moose, we were all fascinated by the history of how it was founded in 1888 as an organization for the betterment of children and families, dedication to strong moral values and the excellent philanthropy in maintaining their beautiful Moosehart child City and School.  When Nancy was born , both her parents were loyal hardworking Moose members.  As she grew up in the Moose Lodge environment she was always there to help and later became the  “Head Cook”.  Nancy has been a member for over 55 years.  WOW!  I could write a book about this fantastic organization, but hey, someone already has.  Ask Nancy about this.   A truly terrific program from one   terrific lady.

See you soon, someplace AROUND TOWN
