Fiesta Time! An Independence Fiesta will be held on Sunday, September 16, 2012 from 1:00 pm until 6:00 pm at Arceo Park, 3125 Tyler Avenue, El Monte, California. In observance of the 212th Anniversary of “The 16th of September”, the revolt against Spanish rule, the celebration will feature a small parade, Ballet Folklorico, Mariachis, Charros and free hot dogs for the first 100 children. A Grandparent’s Day Luncheon & Dance will be held on Thursday, September 13, 2012 at the Jack Crippen Senior Center, 3120 Tyler Avenue, El Monte, California. This event will be presented by the City of El Monte Community Senior Services Division. Doors open at 10:00 am and Lunch will be served at 11:30 am. The City of El Monte Parks, Recreation & Community Services are offering a Fall 2012 Co-ed Flag Football Club for 5/6th and 7/8th graders. The first Round will be held on Tuesday, September 25, 2012 and rounds 2, 3, 4 and 5 in October. Tournament winners will play in November, 2012. The San Gabriel Valley District of Women’s Clubs will hold their September monthly Board meeting on Friday, September 14, 2012 at the Covina Women’s Club, 128 San Jose Avenue, Covina, California. Coffee and donuts are provided, at a small price, before the meeting begins. Newly elected President, Mavis Hansen, will call the meeting to order at 9:30 am. The Pledge of Allegiance will be led by Lorene Gutierrez, President of the El Monte Women’s Club, followed by the singing of God Bless America, led by vocalist Zona Wilt. The business portion of the meeting will begin following the Inspiration for the Day given by Inspirational Chairman Shirley Lane.
A special program on “Bullying” will be presented by Ms. Donna Distelrath, SGVD Advocates for Children Chairman. Ms. Distelrath is also a member of the El Monte Women’s Club, currently employed by the San Gabriel Valley YWCA as the “Respect-for-All” project coordinator. In law enforcement for nearly twenty years, Donna has worked on programs such as SANE and Madd, developed and taught courses on cultural diversity, hate crimes and sexual harassment and worked with at risk youth. Donna has earned degrees in Criminal Justice and Drug and Alcohol Studies and is currently working on a pilot program on Bullying at two El Monte Schools. Of interest to all, there is no charge for admission to hear Ms. Distelrath speak. Members or guests, all are welcome.
